Career Carnival – Day 4

Due to the volume of blogs i received, and extra entries for the twitter snapshot, we will be running Career Carnival for two more days, at which point another recruitment professional will take up the reins. The Carnival is an excellent source for career and job seeking advice. Whilst it’s location is nomadic, you should always follow it. If you want to know the location of Career Carnival at any time, contact @beneeubanks on twitter who created the concept and determines it’s location. Despite 27 years in recruiting, being the host has been a great experience and I’ve learnt a lot that is new myself. With so many bloggers and twitterers, it’s never been easier to get help. Ask for it!

Here is todays blogs and twitter snapshot entries:

@ideserveajob  (Team USA)

Another that keeps me regularly updated on twitter. I enjoy all of his posts which revolve around the job search, and the maze that it is Social Media. You need a good guide to help you through it, @ideserveajob is just that.

The best recommendations come from colleagues who recommend their peers. I was referred to David.M.Scott by @JobHuntOrg. I trust susans word, and i was not disappointed. Don’t think you will be either. This blog is entitled “How David Murray found a new job through Twitter.” An encouraging story for everyone wondering just how they will find a job in 140 characters.

@Karla_Porter (Team USA)

I know I’ve already introduced Karla on day one, but she has just launched her own blog and i hope you will support it. I always enjoy Karla’s work, so much so i offered a guest blog when she launched. Karla has two passions, recruiting and food. I have combined the two in “The art of baking” with 10 Commandments in the job search. please also read Karla’s entries, they are the good ones!

@Ask_The_Rctr (Team USA)

Another that came to my attention via twitter. regular posts to help job seekers with links to great blogs and advice on most things. Also runs a great forum where you can get hands on advice live from the horses mouth. This blog covers networking tips from a recruiters perspective. Well worth following.

Another entry for the twitter snapshot. Top three tips for job seekers. This entry is from @MeghanMBiro

1) Work on establishing an authentic personal brand.

2) Self assess before you embark on a career transition.

3) Use a targeted approach for resume and cover letter submittals.

Wise words, thanks Meghan.

@ErinKennedyCPRW (Team USA)

This blog from Erin gives the inside track on the keywords to include on your resume. As a recruiter, i know there are words that jump out of the page and tell me I’m going to make money. You want these words on your resume describing you. read it, then read your resume again. start re-writing!

In looking at all of Erin’s musings, I’ve also found this entry which i felt also noted a listing. It’s the 5 things you would want to know when writing a resume. Read it, you’ll know why Erin deserves a second listing

@MeghanMBiro (Team USA)

Another entry for Meghan, following her earlier listing in the twitter snapshot. In this blog, Meghan explains the importance of personality and fit. this is the most important part of the interview process for candidates and hiring companies. If either get it wrong, failure happens.

Following on the same theme, if you liked Meghans last one, here’s another that was penned for Career Rocketeer. I chose to include this because it gives good advice on personality tests that you may be faced with.

3 top tips for job seekers:

1. Invest time studying your strengths – Do a 360 – ask friends, peers, superiors; take a personality self-assessment to get additional insights.

2. Spend time with “nurturing” people – people who will help you focus on the positive and build your confidence

3. Build pride from your past achievements – speak passionately about them, derive transferable skills, go from strength-to-strength.

You can also find Sharad’s blog on Careers in modern times which contains a whole list of blogs for job seekers, particularly those seeking their first opportunity. Dip in and see what you find.

In closing Day 4 i’m going to leave you with a message from a UK Recruiter who works at the coalface in HR recruitment. Here are the twitter snap shot tips for @mervino (Team UK)

3 Tips 1 – Make sure CV shows 5 key achievements where you have made a difference and added value..be prepared to discuss them at interview

3 Tips 2 – Make sure LinkedIn profile is complete with skills, specialities and recommendations…join groups and take part in discussions

3 Tips 3 – Be patient, there’s a global recession on so roles may be scarce..try and enrol for courses or seminars to gain extra skills

Hope you’ve enjoyed today’s listings, they are here to help you.

Last chance tomorrow for submissions. if you liked my work please leave a comment, if you didn’t, leave one anyway, all feedback is good.
